Proportions check

The rise should sit at the natural hip — if you can slide a fist between the waistband and your body, they're too loose; if it cuts into the hip bone, size up. The hem should graze the top of the shoe with a whisper of a break.

Layering notes

The khaki chino is the neutral bottom that any top layer reads well over. In autumn, layer above with a navy blazer and add a trench coat; in spring, skip the coat entirely and let the khaki brighten the outfit.

The most common mistake

Picking 'tan' or 'sand' that's actually orange — true khaki is a muted green-brown.

Who should think twice

Very short men may find that a mid-toned khaki cuts the leg and looks stumpy — try a longer cut with a clean hem or switch to navy for a more vertical line. Men with a casual-only lifestyle might find they reach for dark jeans more often; khaki chinos need a minimum of smart-casual context to earn their keep.
