How to style a navy blazer
Unstructured shoulder = wears like a cardigan, dresses up like a suit jacket.
Why this piece matters
Replaces the suit jacket worn as a standalone blazer — which always looks like a man who forgot the trousers — and replaces the zip-up fleece as the smart-casual layering piece. The navy blazer bridges the gap between formal and casual that nothing else in the wardrobe can.
Unstructured shoulder = wears like a cardigan, dresses up like a suit jacket.
A short history
The blazer originated as a Cambridge rowing-club jacket in 1825. The unstructured Italian variant emerged in Naples in the 1950s as resistance to British tailoring rigidity.
Three outfit formulas
work
Navy blazer + white Oxford + grey trousers + brown Derby shoes + brown belt
smart casual
Navy blazer + white T-shirt + dark jeans + white sneakers
smart casual
Navy blazer + Breton stripe + cream chinos + loafers sockless
Styling dos and don'ts
Do
- ✓Pair with off-tone trousers — grey, khaki, stone — never another navy piece on the same axis
- ✓Wear with a contrast collar: white Oxford or white turtleneck creates the visual separation the blazer needs
- ✓Leave the bottom button open — this applies to every blazer ever made at every price point
- ✓Steam rather than iron — wet heat relaxes the wool canvas; dry iron can create sheen
- ✓Use it as the third piece in casual outfits: white tee + dark jeans + navy blazer is a complete look
Don't
- ✗Don't wear with navy trousers of any shade — it looks like a destroyed suit
- ✗Don't button the bottom button — not ever, not for any reason
- ✗Don't combine with athletic sneakers unless the blazer is deliberately relaxed in cut
- ✗Don't pair with navy chinos — two navies in the same outfit is a lost suit complaint
- ✗Don't buy one with structured shoulder padding for casual everyday use — unstructured Italian shoulder is the only version that works across contexts
Proportions check
The shoulder seam ends exactly at the shoulder bone — never past it. If the seam slides off the shoulder, size down. The sleeve hem should reveal a quarter-inch of shirt cuff when arms hang by the sides.
Layering notes
The blazer goes on top of an Oxford, turtleneck, or crewneck sweater. Under the blazer in winter: nothing more (it's already the outerwear-substitute layer). In very cold weather, add a camel overcoat on top.
The most common mistake
Buttoning the bottom button. The bottom button on any blazer is decorative — it stays open.
Who should think twice
Men with very broad shoulders and a very slim waist may find that a structured navy blazer makes the shoulder-to-hip ratio look exaggerated. An unstructured shoulder (the default Italian style) minimises this. Men who never attend any event above casual-weekend level will underuse a blazer — wait until the occasion presents before buying.
