Why this piece matters

Replaces the lightweight 'fashion coat' as the serious winter outerwear piece. A 24oz melton peacoat is warmer than a synthetic-fill parka and ages into character over a decade of wear.

Naval heritage in heavy melton wool. Double-breasted, six anchor buttons, broad lapel. Warmer than a topcoat, more characterful than a parka.

A short history

Originated as Dutch naval uniform in the 18th century — 'pijjekker' (pea + jacket). Adopted by the US Navy in 1881 in 30oz melton wool. Schott NYC's Boatswain peacoat is the civilian reference.

Three outfit formulas

winter

Navy peacoat + grey crewneck sweater + raw denim + Chelsea boots

smart casual

Peacoat + white Oxford + grey wool trousers + suede chukka boots

weekend

Peacoat + striped breton tee + raw denim + leather Chelsea boots

Styling dos and don'ts

Do

  • Wear over a crewneck sweater or Oxford shirt with the lapels casually open
  • Pair with raw denim and Chelsea boots for the canonical heritage look
  • Choose navy or charcoal — black peacoats are uncommon and read costume-y
  • Cuff the sleeves slightly to show a hint of sweater or shirt cuff
  • Treat as 3-season outerwear (fall/winter/early spring) — pulled out as the temperature drops

Don't

  • Don't pair with athletic sneakers — the heritage demands leather boots or brogues
  • Don't fasten the top button unless the wind genuinely demands it — formal and stiff
  • Don't pair with shorts or summer-weight bottoms — peacoats are heavy and signal winter
  • Don't choose a peacoat with thin polyester lining — the inside should feel substantial
  • Don't pair with a hoodie underneath — visual register clash; sweater or shirt only

Proportions check

Body length to high hip — covers the waistband of trousers but not past the seat. Lapel width: broad (3.5–4 inches) — narrow lapels are wrong for the heritage. Shoulder slightly dropped to allow a sweater layer underneath.

Layering notes

Layers OVER a crewneck sweater, Oxford shirt, or fine knit. Does not layer under anything — peacoat is the outermost layer. In severe cold, swap the sweater layer to a heavier wool turtleneck rather than adding outerwear on top.

The most common mistake

Choosing a lightweight peacoat. The whole point is heavy melton (24oz+) — anything lighter is a peacoat costume, not a peacoat.

Who should think twice

Very tall men (over 6'4) sometimes find peacoats end too short for their proportions — a bridge coat (mid-thigh length) reads better. Short men (under 5'7) should check the body length doesn't overwhelm their frame.

Care & ownership

Ownership dos

  • Choose 24oz+ melton wool
  • Look for genuine horn or anchor buttons
  • Pair with denim or wool trousers

Ownership don'ts

  • Don't pair with shorts — peacoat is a cold-weather piece, period
  • Don't fasten the top buttons unless very cold — looks costume-y
  • Don't pick a 'fashion peacoat' with thin lining
