Proportions check

Loafers cut the leg at the ankle, so they lengthen best under a cropped or slightly-above-the-ankle hem. With midi lengths, aim the skirt hem at the slimmest part of the calf and let a sliver of ankle show above the shoe.

The loafer defines the outfit's register as smart-casual. Whatever is above it — chinos, navy blazer, Oxford — confirms the direction. It doesn't work under formal outerwear contexts or with anything heavier than a mid-weight knit coat.

The most common mistake

Saving them for trousers — loafers against bare ankles, cropped denim, or a midi skirt is the work-to-weekend styling move; add socks and they turn schoolgirl-preppy, which is a choice to make on purpose.

Who should think twice

If you rely on heels for leg length, a flat loafer will feel short until you rebalance the outfit — a higher rise, a cropped hem, or a mid-calf skirt restores the proportion. Very high arches can find the slip-on last unforgiving; size for a snug heel, not a loose one.
