Tall men's capsule wardrobe.

30 pieces with sleeve, inseam, and torso math built in. Below: the fit rules every tall man eventually learns the hard way, the brands that actually cut tall sizes, and AI try-on so the proportions work before you buy.

The short answer

Tall men (6'2" and up) need 36/37 sleeve, 34+ inseam, 30+ shirt body. The brands that stock these by default are Lands' End, Charles Tyrwhitt, J.Crew Tall, Bonobos Tall, Banana Republic Tall, and Suit Supply Long. Standard "L" sizing is cut for 5'10" — going up to XL adds width, not length.

The fit problem for tall men

Most off-the-rack menswear is sized for a 5'10" frame. The standard "L" in dress shirts assumes a 27–29 inch body and a 35-inch sleeve. Standard chinos come with a 32-inch inseam. Standard blazers hit at the mid-hip, measured on a 5'10" torso. None of this fits a 6'2"+ frame correctly.

The default tall-man response — order one size up — solves the wrong problem. Going from L to XL adds 2 inches of width across the chest, but only fractional inches in sleeve and body length. The shirt is now wider than it should be, still too short, and untucks itself by lunch. The same applies to jackets, sweaters, and t-shirts. Width-up doesn't fix length-short.

The actual solution is brand selection. A handful of brands have figured out tall-specific sizing — extending body and sleeve length by 2–3 inches without correspondingly widening the chest or shoulder. The 30-piece capsule below is built around those brands. For the most part, the silhouette and palette are the same as a regular men's capsule wardrobe; what changes is the size code.

Five fit rules for tall men

1

Sleeve must hit the wrist bone, not above

Standard 'L' shirts are cut for 5'10". On 6'2"+, the sleeve rides 1.5–2 inches short, exposing watch and forearm in a way that reads ill-fitting. Look for 'tall' or 'long' sizing (Lands' End LT, Charles Tyrwhitt 36/37 sleeve, Banana Republic Tall, Uniqlo 'Tall' line in select countries).

2

Trouser inseam at 34 minimum, 36 if you're 6'4"+

32-inch inseam is the off-the-rack standard. On 6'2"+, that lands above the ankle and reads short. Most 'regular' chinos and dress trousers are designed for a 5'10" frame. Brands with 34/36 stocked: J.Crew, Bonobos, Levi's 511, Charles Tyrwhitt, Suit Supply, Spier & Mackay.

3

Shirt body length 30 inches+ (true, not measured at the collar)

A 'regular' shirt body is 27–29 inches; tucked into trousers, it untucks itself by mid-day on a 6'2"+ torso. 'Tall' or 'XLT' specifically extends the body 2–3 inches. This is the single biggest fit difference for tall men in dress shirts.

4

Jacket length proportional to your torso, not the standard chart

Jackets sized 'L' typically hit at the mid-hip on 5'10". On 6'2"+, that hits at the waist and creates a stubby silhouette. Tall-cut jackets (J.Crew Ludlow Tall, Bonobos Foundation Tall, Suit Supply Long) extend the body by 1.5–2 inches and the sleeves correspondingly.

5

Avoid cropped silhouettes — they amplify height

Cropped trousers, cropped jackets, mid-rise sweaters: these were designed for shorter frames where a small crop adds proportion. On a tall frame, they read ill-fitting and amplify the existing length. Stick with standard or long versions of every silhouette.

Frequently asked questions

What size do tall men actually need in shirts and trousers?

For shirts: sleeve length 36 or 37 inches and body length 30+ inches if you're 6'2" or taller. For trousers: 34 inseam if you're 6'2", 36 if 6'4"+, and 38 if 6'6"+. Standard 'L' shirts are cut for 5'10" — they will be 1.5–2 inches short on a tall frame. Charles Tyrwhitt, Lands' End LT, J.Crew Tall, and Bonobos Tall all stock these sizes by default.

Are tall men's clothes more expensive?

Slightly. The mass-market tall-size lines (Lands' End LT, Banana Republic Tall, Uniqlo Tall) price the same as their regular-size equivalents — sometimes within 5–10% of regular. The tailoring and made-to-measure options (Suit Supply Long, Spier & Mackay) cost the same as regular fit. Premium tall-specific brands (Bonobos Tall) price 10–15% above non-tall brands of similar quality, but the fit-correctness justifies it. The overall capsule cost is comparable to a regular-fit capsule.

Should tall men avoid skinny silhouettes?

Yes — skinny silhouettes amplify height vertically and add nothing to the proportional balance. The 2026 menswear silhouette (slim-straight denim, pleated trousers, unstructured blazers) is naturally more flattering for tall men than the 2010s skinny silhouette. Slim-straight is the operative term: enough taper to read modern, enough room to hold proportion. Avoid: skinny denim, slim-fit Oxford shirts cut for 5'10" frames, cropped silhouettes of any kind.

Can a tall man wear cropped trousers?

Generally no. Cropped trousers were designed to add visual proportion to shorter frames. On a tall frame, they read as too-short rather than as styled. Stick with standard or long inseam (34 or 36). The exception: in summer, a slightly-shorter pleated linen trouser ending at the ankle bone (full break, not above) reads correct on tall men — this isn't 'cropped', it's just standard length on a 6'4" frame.

Does a tall man's capsule wardrobe need different brands?

Mostly yes. The brands that have figured out tall sizing — Charles Tyrwhitt, Lands' End, Bonobos Tall, J.Crew Tall, Suit Supply Long — should anchor the capsule. The fast-fashion brands that don't bother with tall (Zara, H&M, fast Uniqlo lines outside Japan) won't fit, no matter the size you order. The 30-piece capsule above is buildable from 7–8 tall-friendly brands; you don't need a different brand for every piece.

What's the biggest fit mistake tall men make?

Buying 'L' or 'XL' instead of 'LT' or 'XLT' in shirts. The non-tall sizes scale up in width but not length — so going XL gets you a wider shirt that's still 1.5" short in the sleeve and untucks itself by lunch. The LT and XLT designations specifically extend body and sleeve. Second biggest mistake: 32-inch inseam trousers because that's what's stocked locally. Order online from a brand that stocks 34/36 instead.

Is AI try-on useful for tall men?

Especially useful — because the fit-on-body question is the entire problem for tall men. Standard product photography is shot on 5'10" models, so a coat that looks proportional in the catalogue shot may hit at the wrong place on a 6'2" frame. The AI try-on per-piece lets you confirm proportion before clicking buy. For high-stakes pieces (overcoat, blazer, dress trousers) this is a meaningful upgrade over guessing from product photos.
