A short history

Proportions check

The hem ends just above the knee for women — long enough to give the silhouette weight, short enough not to restrict stride. The epaulettes should sit flat with the buttons fastened.

Layering notes

An excellent layering coat — room for a blazer and knitwear underneath. The storm flap at the chest adds an extra layer of warmth when closed. Pair with a wool scarf in the collar for cold autumn days.

The most common mistake

Buckling the belt rather than tying — the belt always knots at the side, never through the buckle.

Who should think twice

Petite women should choose a trench that ends above the knee — a longer trench makes the leg look shorter. If you live in a climate with more than 4 months of below-freezing weather, a trench is a transitional coat that needs a warm supplement.
