Cone Mills' White Oak plant in North Carolina wove American selvedge from 1905 to 2017. Japanese mills (Kuroki, Nihon Menpu) carry the tradition forward.

✗Don't spot-clean with bleach — any cleaning agent besides cold water and a small amount of mild soap

Proportions check

Size to your true waist — raw denim stretches 1–2 inches in the waist with wear but will never grow longer in the leg. Buy slim-straight for the most versatile silhouette: straight from hip to hem, no taper.

Layering notes

Raw denim is the bottom layer of any casual outfit. Over it goes a T-shirt, crewneck, or overshirt at minimum. Outerwear above: field jacket, harrington, leather jacket, or waxed coat for the full raw-denim-heritage stack.

The most common mistake

Washing them within the first six months — robs you of the personalized fade pattern.

Who should think twice

Men who can't commit to a 6-month break-in period without washing should buy washed selvedge instead — the aesthetic is the same without the discipline requirement.
