A short history

British military uniforms in colonial India introduced the cotton-drill walking short in the 1860s; J. Crew and Bonobos reintroduced the 7- and 9-inch inseam to a country that had been wearing cargo shorts since 1995.

Styling dos and don'ts

Do

✓Pair with a tucked polo or linen shirt for the most finished version of this casual formula
✓Go sockless with leather loafers — the bare ankle next to the short's hem is the entire look
✓Stick to solid colours: navy, stone, olive — pattern draws the eye to the shorts and nowhere else

Proportions check

The hem ends one to two inches above the kneecap. If it ends at the knee, the shorts read like culottes. If it ends at mid-thigh, the proportions tip into a different reference. The leg opening should sit clean against the thigh without pulling.

Layering notes

Shorts don't layer below. For outerwear, a lightweight linen overshirt or open denim shirt in spring works; in cooler evenings a harrington jacket is the right weight.

Cargo pockets. Anywhere, anytime, on anyone.

Who should think twice

Men with very pale legs who are self-conscious should start with mid-tone stone or tan shorts which read more cohesively with pale skin than bold navy. Very tall men with long legs may find that a 9-inch inseam looks short — consider an 11-inch inseam for proportional balance.
