Why this piece matters

A short history

René Lacoste invented the modern short-sleeve polo in 1933 to replace the long-sleeve cotton shirts tennis players were sweating through. Ralph Lauren turned it into a status piece in 1972 with the embroidered horse.

Styling dos and don'ts

Do

✓Leave the top button open — always — for every occasion except a funeral
✓Choose solid block colours over piques with patterns: burgundy, navy, ecru, stone
✓Pair with chinos and leather shoes for elevated smart-casual — the polo can do that range
✓Tuck into chinos for a clean waistband, especially with loafers or Derbies
✓Let the knit collar sit flat and smooth — if it curls, the collar has collapsed and the shirt is done

Don't

✗Don't pop the collar — it was ironic in 2005 and not even ironic now
✗Don't pair with shorts that end above the knee — proportionally awkward
✗Don't combine with a sport sneaker (trainers) — the polo signals something leather-adjacent
✗Don't layer under a blazer — the collar bunch reads incorrectly under a lapel
✗Don't wear with a logo bigger than a 1cm embroidered crest

Proportions check

The placket runs down the center of the chest — it should lie flat without gaping. If the buttons pull sideways, the chest fit is too tight. The sleeve band at the upper arm should sit clean, not dig.

Layering notes

A polo doesn't layer well — it is the layer. For transitional weather, wear it under an open harrington or bomber jacket. It does work under a zip-up fleece if the collar is left flat inside.

The most common mistake

Buttoning all three buttons — top button stays open unless you're under 12.

Who should think twice

Men with a short neck should avoid polo shirts — the collar compresses the visible neck area further. If your neck-to-shoulder ratio is short, a crewneck sweater does the same casual work without the collar. Those who exercise heavily may find the polo's knit collar stretches within one season.
