Why this piece matters

Replaces the waterproof anorak or parka as the go-to transitional-weather outerwear. A proper trench coat does everything a rain jacket does (minus technical membrane) while looking deliberately dressed rather than dressed for rain.

A short history

Burberry and Aquascutum developed the gabardine trench for British officers in the 1900s; Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961) and Humphrey Bogart (Casablanca, 1942) made it cinema's most iconic coat.

Styling dos and don'ts

Do

✓Tie the belt in a loose knot at the side — through the loops, not through the buckle — always
✓Wear over a blazer in autumn for an office-ready layered look
✓Pair with Chelsea boots and dark jeans for the classic spring-rain silhouette
✓Stick to khaki, stone, or navy — any other colour fights the trench's authority
✓Let the belt hang open when moving between buildings — a swinging belt is part of the trench's cinematic language

Don't

✗Don't buckle the belt through the D-ring in front — it reads as a dressing error
✗Don't wear in deep winter — gabardine is water-resistant but uninsulated
✗Don't combine with a hood (anorak) or zip-in liner that shows at the hem
✗Don't pair with bright coloured accessories — the trench coat's power is in its restraint
✗Don't let it drag the floor — it should end at mid-thigh at the absolute longest

Proportions check

The trench hem hits mid-thigh for men and just above the knee for women — it should clear both knee-level sitting and fast-walking stride. The epaulette should sit flat against the shoulder with the button fastened.

Layering notes

An excellent coat for layering — room in the chest for a blazer plus sweater underneath. The storm flap at the chest keeps warmth in even with the coat open. Pair with a wool scarf in the collar for extra warmth.

The most common mistake

Buckling the belt — the belt ties in a knot at the side, never through the buckle.

Who should think twice

Very short people (under 5'3") can find the trench coat's double-breasted boxy silhouette overwhelming — a single-breasted, shorter-hem cut in a lighter weight is more proportional. If you live in a cold climate below -5°C regularly, a trench is not a winter coat.
