A short history

The 'bleu de travail' (worker's blue) appeared in late-1800s France as a uniform for railway and agricultural workers. Moleskin and twill weaves; the indigo dye fades distinctly with wear.

Proportions check

Shoulder seam slightly past the natural shoulder (intentional drop). Body slightly oversized — you should be able to wear a heavy sweater underneath without pulling. Length to the high hip, never past the seat.

Layering notes

Layers over a t-shirt or crewneck sweater. Layers UNDER nothing — the chore coat is the outer layer in spring/fall, and gets supplanted by a waxed jacket or overcoat in winter rather than layered with one.

The most common mistake
