What to wear to a funeral

At a funeral your clothes have one job: to show respect and not draw attention to you. That means muted, modest and understated — you want to disappear into the room, not stand out in it. The good news is it's simple, and you almost certainly already own everything you need.

The rule

Dark, muted, modest and understated. Black is traditional but not required — any dark, sombre colour reads as respectful.

For men

  • ·A dark suit (charcoal, navy or black) with a white or pale shirt; a tie if it's a formal service.
  • ·No suit? Dark trousers + a dark jumper or a plain collared shirt is perfectly respectful.
  • ·Polished dark shoes — Oxfords, Derbies or clean leather boots. No trainers.

For women

  • ·A dark dress (knee-length or longer), or dark trousers/skirt with a modest top.
  • ·Keep necklines high and hemlines modest; cover shoulders if the service is religious.
  • ·Low or flat closed shoes; minimal, quiet jewellery.

Do

  • Default to dark, muted colours — black, charcoal, navy, deep grey, deep green.
  • Dress modestly and a touch more formally than you think you need to.
  • Check if the family requested a specific colour (some celebrations of life do).

Don't

  • Don't wear bright colours, bold patterns or anything flashy.
  • Don't wear anything revealing, casual (jeans, trainers, shorts) or attention-seeking.
  • Don't over-accessorise — no statement jewellery, no strong fragrance.
