What is virtual try-on?
Virtual try-on is the technology that lets you see a piece of clothing on yourself without physically wearing it. The first generations of virtual try-on (2018-2022) produced obvious AI-rendered approximations — recognisable but unconvincing. The current generation, powered by fashion-trained 864×1296 photorealistic models, produces output that's good enough to make confident buying decisions on most garment categories.
The use case that finally made virtual try-on stick is the one we've built around: reducing returns. Online apparel returns hover at 30-40%, and the single biggest reason is that the garment didn't suit the body. Per-piece virtual try-on cuts that rate dramatically because the buying decision is made with a photo of you wearing the piece, not a photo of a stock model.
How the virtual try-on works

A full-body photo works best. We process it in-memory, never store it on our servers.

Privacy: how we handle your photo
- Your photo is processed in-memory for a single try-on and discarded immediately after the result returns.
- Nothing is retained on our servers. Nothing written to disk.
- Nothing is added to a training set. Your image never trains future models.
- Photo lives only in your browser's session storage during the active session — clears when you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions
What is virtual try-on?
Virtual try-on is a technology that uses AI to render a clothing garment onto a photo of you, producing a photorealistic image of you wearing the piece without physically trying it on. The good versions render the cloth's drape, the way it sits on your shoulders, the proportional fit on your body — close enough to a physical try-on that you can confidently decide whether to buy.
How does virtual try-on work?
Modern virtual try-on tools use generative AI models trained specifically on fashion data — millions of garment + body image pairs that teach the model how clothes drape, stretch, and sit. Capsule Wardrobe AI runs a fashion-trained 864×1296 photorealistic model. You upload a photo of yourself, the model accepts a garment image, and ~10 seconds later returns a rendered image of you wearing the piece.
Is the virtual try-on accurate?
For tops, sweaters, blazers, and outerwear — yes, accurate enough to make confident buying decisions. The model handles drape, fit, and proportion well. For jeans and trousers, accuracy is good but body shape can subtly affect the rendered fit. For footwear, the current model is less reliable; we're shipping a separate footwear AI for that. Always treat the virtual try-on as a strong indicator, not a guarantee — physical fit testing remains the gold standard for high-stakes purchases.
Is virtual try-on free?
Capsule Wardrobe AI's virtual try-on is free for the first 3 generations per device, no signup, no credit card. Beyond 3 try-ons, the Pro tier is $8/month for unlimited generations.
Does virtual try-on work on any device?
Yes — it's a web app (PWA), works on any phone, tablet, or desktop with a modern browser. No app install, no account creation needed for the free tier. iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux all supported.
Is my photo stored when I use virtual try-on?
No. Your photo is processed in-memory for a single try-on, sent to the AI inference endpoint, and discarded immediately after the result returns. Nothing is retained on our servers. Nothing is added to a training set. Our privacy policy says exactly this.
What types of clothes can I try on virtually?
Currently: tops (Oxford shirts, sweaters, T-shirts, polos, henleys, denim shirts, turtlenecks), bottoms (jeans, chinos, dress trousers, shorts), and outerwear (blazers, overcoats, bombers, denim and leather jackets). Footwear and accessories are catalogued but virtual try-on for those categories is in the next release. Womenswear catalogue is live and growing weekly.
How is virtual try-on different from AI outfit generation?
Virtual try-on shows you wearing a specific garment you've selected. AI outfit generation suggests complete outfits — top, bottom, outerwear — combined into a coherent look. The two are complementary: the AI outfit generator picks the outfit, virtual try-on shows you wearing it. Capsule Wardrobe AI does both in one flow.
