Fabric Types: How Each One Wears, Washes and Lasts

A buyer's guide to the fabrics in your clothes — what cotton, linen, wool, cashmere, viscose, polyester and elastane actually do over years of wear, and how to read a composition label before you buy.

Most people choose clothes by colour, fit and price, then discover the fabric was the decision that actually mattered — eighteen months later, when the jumper is covered in pills, the trousers have gone baggy at the knee, or the shirt still smells faintly of the last time it was worn no matter how it is washed.

A capsule wardrobe makes this sharper, not softer. When you own thirty pieces instead of a hundred and fifty, each one gets worn several times a month. Fabric that would survive occasional use gets pushed hard, and the difference between fibres stops being academic. The composition label is the most useful thing on a garment and the least read.

The three families, and why the family matters most

Individual fibre names get marketed into confusion. The families do not.

  • Natural fibres — grown, from a plant or an animal. Cotton, linen, wool, cashmere, silk. They absorb moisture, which is why they feel comfortable against skin for long periods and why they generally do not hold odour.
  • Regenerated cellulosics — wood pulp chemically reformed into fibre. Viscose, modal, lyocell. They behave like naturals to wear, with better drape, but they are more fragile in the wash.
  • Synthetics — made from petrochemicals. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane. Strong, dimensionally stable, quick-drying, and they do not absorb moisture — which is both their advantage in a raincoat and their problem in a t-shirt.

If you remember nothing else: absorbency predicts comfort and odour, fibre strength predicts lifespan. Nearly everything below follows from those two properties.

The natural fibres

Cotton

The default for good reason: breathable, absorbent, soft, and it improves with washing rather than degrading. Its weaknesses are wrinkling, shrinkage on a hot wash, and a tendency to lose shape in knitwear.

The variable worth paying for is staple length — how long the individual fibres are. Long-staple cottons, sold as pima, Supima or Egyptian, spin into smoother, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends, which means a fabric that pills less and holds up longer. This is the single clearest case in clothing where a named upgrade corresponds to something real rather than marketing.

Linen

Made from flax, and the most breathable common fabric — it absorbs moisture and releases it quickly, which is why it feels cool in heat. It is also one of the strongest natural fibres and genuinely softens over years rather than wearing out.

The trade-off is creasing, and it is inherent: linen has very little elastic recovery, so it does not spring back from a fold. Buying linen and being annoyed that it wrinkles is like buying a convertible and being annoyed by the wind. Either accept the crumple or buy a linen-cotton blend, which creases less and breathes almost as well.

Wool

The most underrated fibre for a small wardrobe, because of three properties that suit heavy rotation. It insulates even when slightly damp. It resists odour, so a wool jumper can be worn several times between washes. And it has real elastic recovery, so it sheds wrinkles overnight on a hanger.

Fineness determines comfort: merino is fine enough to wear against skin, while lambswool and Shetland are warmer and more robust but scratchier. Wool's vulnerability is felting — heat plus agitation makes the scales on the fibre lock together permanently, which is exactly what a hot machine wash does. That is a one-way trip, not a stain.

Cashmere

The fine undercoat of the cashmere goat: exceptionally warm for its weight and very soft. It is also a short, fine fibre, which is precisely why it pills — there are more loose ends per centimetre of yarn. Pilling on cashmere is not a defect, it is the fibre behaving as expected, and it should be combed off rather than pulled.

Silk

A protein fibre with a smooth surface, so it feels cool on contact and regulates temperature well. It is stronger than it looks but has two specific enemies: sunlight, which weakens and yellows it over time, and alkaline detergents, which attack the protein. Water spots easily on some weaves, which is why silk gets a reputation for fragility it only partly deserves.

The wood-pulp fabrics: viscose, modal and lyocell

These sit between natural and synthetic — made from cellulose, so they wear like naturals, but manufactured, so their properties are engineered.

Viscose (also sold as rayon) drapes beautifully and breathes well, and it is cheap. Its problem is water: viscose loses a substantial amount of its strength when wet, so a machine wash can stretch, shrink or distort a garment that looked fine dry. If a viscose dress says dry clean, that is usually why.

Modal is a stronger version of the same idea, and holds up considerably better to repeated washing — common in underwear and t-shirts for that reason.

Lyocell, usually branded TENCEL, is the strongest and most pill-resistant of the three, and is produced in a closed-loop process that recovers most of the solvent used. In a capsule where things get washed often, lyocell is the one of the three worth seeking out.

The synthetics

Polyester

Strong, colourfast, wrinkle-resistant, fast-drying, cheap. In outerwear, linings and technical clothing it is genuinely the right answer. Worn against skin all day it is not, because it does not absorb moisture — body oils sit on the fibre surface, bacteria feed on them, and the garment develops a smell that survives washing. That is a material property, not a hygiene failure.

It also melts rather than scorches, so a hot iron does permanent damage in a second, and it sheds microplastic fibres in the wash.

Nylon and acrylic

Nylon (polyamide) is the most abrasion-resistant common fibre, which is why it dominates bags, outer shells and hosiery. Acrylic is the wool impersonator: warm and cheap, but it pills badly, holds odour, and tends to look tired within a season. In knitwear, acrylic content is the clearest single predictor of a jumper that will not last.

Elastane — the fibre that decides when a garment dies

Elastane (spandex, Lycra) appears in tiny percentages and changes everything. Two to five per cent transforms how a garment moves with the body. It is also the least durable thing in most wardrobes: it degrades with heat, chlorine, oils and simply with time, and it is usually what fails first. Bagged-out knees and a waistband that no longer recovers are elastane wearing out, not the cotton.

The practical consequence: a stretch garment is a consumable. Buy it expecting a shorter life, wash it cold, and keep it out of the dryer, where heat kills it fastest.

How to read a composition label properly

  • Order is by percentage. The first fibre listed sets the character of the garment.
  • Small numbers matter. A few per cent of elastane changes both the stretch and the lifespan; a few per cent of another fibre can change the whole care regime.
  • The weakest fibre governs care.A mostly-cotton shirt with a little viscose still needs the viscose's cold, gentle wash.
  • Blends are a compromise, not automatically a downgrade. Cotton-linen creases less than pure linen. Wool-polyester holds a press. Cotton-elastane fits better. The question is whether the compromise is one you actually wanted.
  • Weight tells you as much as fibre. Two shirts both labelled 100% cotton can be completely different garments. Hold the fabric up to the light and feel the weight in your hand.

What to buy for a small wardrobe

A capsule rewards fabrics that survive frequent wear and frequent washing, and that look deliberate rather than cheap when they age.

  • Warm weather: linen, linen-cotton, long-staple cotton, lyocell.
  • Cold weather: merino for next-to-skin layers, lambswool for outer knits, wool blends for coats.
  • Everyday shirts and tees: long-staple cotton, or a cotton-lyocell blend for drape.
  • Trousers: wool or cotton twill; treat heavy-stretch versions as shorter-lived.
  • Outerwear: this is where polyester and nylon genuinely belong.
  • Be sceptical of: acrylic knitwear, high-viscose garments you intend to machine wash, and anything mostly synthetic that sits against skin all day.

The care rule that matters more than all the others

Heat is what destroys clothes. Hot water shrinks cotton and felts wool; a hot dryer degrades elastane, sets stains and beats fibres loose so they pill. Washing cold, washing less often, and air-drying will extend the life of almost every garment in your wardrobe more than any product you can buy.

Wash inside out to protect the face of the fabric, do up zips so they stop chewing everything else in the drum, and give wool and cashmere a rest day between wears so the fibres can recover their shape. None of that is difficult. It is just the difference between a capsule that still looks good in three years and one that quietly needs replacing in one — which is the whole point of buying fewer things properly.

How do you read a fabric composition label?

Fibres are listed by percentage, highest first, and the dominant fibre sets the character of the garment. Two things are worth knowing. Small percentages matter more than they look — 2 to 5% elastane changes both the stretch and the lifespan. And the most fragile fibre in the blend usually dictates the care instructions, which is why a mostly-cotton shirt with a little viscose can still need a cold, gentle wash.

Why do my clothes pill, and can I stop it?

Pilling is loose fibre ends tangling into balls under friction, so it happens most at cuffs, underarms and where a bag strap rubs. Short-staple and weaker fibres pill most, which is why cashmere and acrylic pill readily and long-staple cotton and lyocell resist it. You cannot prevent it entirely, but you can slow it: wash inside out, wash less often, avoid the dryer, and remove pills with a comb or fabric shaver rather than picking them off, which pulls out more fibre.

Does higher price mean better fabric?

Not reliably. Price reflects brand, margin and construction as much as material, and a composition label costs nothing to read. A well-made mid-price garment in long-staple cotton will outlast an expensive one in a weak blend. Check the composition, the weight in the hand, and the seams — those tell you more about how it will look in two years than the price tag does.
